The quiet half of the business

Cargo and post

Passengers pay the wages, but the ledger says the mountain lives on freight. Every Panorama train tows a short freight hook, and the railway has carried the summit station's supplies, the observatory's instruments, and the valley's post for over a century.

Daily

The post

Mail rides the 08:04 up and the 17:35 down. The Treeline school stop collects the valley's outgoing letters from a painted post box that is emptied by the guard, stamped on arrival at Falzgrund, and was installed in 1938.

Weekly

The summit load

Provisions for Sattelhorn ride Tuesdays: flour, cheese, cocoa in tins, and the restaurant's wine, which travels in straw-lined crates and arrives tasting of the journey, or so the stationkeeper insists.

On call

Anything heavy

Boilers, telescope mirrors, pianos. The record is a 640-kilogram telescope objective in 2012, carried on a reinforced flat and greeted at the summit by half the village. Book through the contact desk.
