The ride, in thirds

Section 01

The 22:05 up

One car, lanterns on the external steps, the driver running at half rack speed. The carriage lights are dimmed to observatory rules above Treeline so the astronomers' eyes stay dark-adapted. Conversations drop to a murmur without being asked.

Section 02

The observatory stop

The train holds at the summit fifteen minutes past arrival for the staff transfer, then the deck opens to ticket holders for the 23:10 descent. Star maps are handed out at the gate; the tea room stays open for cocoa.

Section 03

The last descent

23:10 down, 23:55 back at Falzgrund, rack inspected, board set for the morning. The Night Owl has run every Friday and Saturday since 2012 in snow, storm, and once in a full eclipse, which the dispatcher still talks about.
