The Sonnenberg rack · since 1912

The slow way up the mountain.

A cog railway is not the fastest way to 2,540 metres. It is the way that lets you watch the valley drop away, grain by grain, for forty-two minutes. High Spur Railway has been climbing the Sonnenberg since 1912, and it has never once been in a hurry.

The climb

1,420 metres, one profile

From the lake fog at Falzgrund to the wind at Sattelhorn. The rack passes the sawmill road, crosses the high meadow on a wooden viaduct, and enters the Saddle Gallery for the last hard push. The profile below is the whole railway on one line.

In praise of the switchback

A rack railway could climb straight up. Ours doesn't, and the reason is older than the railway.

How a winter timetable is written

It takes four drafts, two avalanche bulletins, and one very patient dispatcher to move a single departure by ten minutes.
